Roofing FAQ

30 honest answers to the most common roofing questions from homeowners across Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Don't see your question? Call us at (740) 263-4357.

Cost & Estimates

How much does a roof replacement cost in Ohio?+
Most residential roof replacements in Ohio fall in a wide range depending on square footage, pitch, material, and tear-off layers. Asphalt shingle replacements are usually the most affordable option, while standing seam metal sits at the top of the range. The honest answer is that no reputable roofer can quote you accurately without inspecting the roof. We offer free, no-obligation inspections and written estimates so you know exactly what your project will cost before you commit.
How do I get a roofing estimate?+
Three options. Call us at (740) 263-4357 to book a free in-person inspection, fill out our contact form for a callback, or use our Instant Estimate tool to get an immediate ballpark number based on your home's measurements. The in-person inspection gives you the most accurate quote.

Repair vs. Replace

How do I know if I need a new roof or just a repair?+
It depends on the age of the roof, the extent of the damage, and how widespread the wear is. Localized damage on a roof under 15 years old is usually a repair candidate. Widespread granule loss, multiple leaks, sagging, or curling shingles on a 20-plus year old roof typically point to replacement. We take an assessment-first approach — we inspect honestly and recommend the path that's right for your home, not the most expensive option.

Insurance & Storms

Does homeowner's insurance cover storm damage to my roof?+
In most cases, yes — sudden damage from wind, hail, or fallen trees is typically a covered peril under standard homeowner's policies. Wear and tear from age is not. The key is documentation: a professional inspection within a reasonable window of the storm gives you the evidence your adjuster needs. We work with all major insurance carriers and can meet your adjuster on-site.
How do I file a storm damage insurance claim for my roof?+
Start with a professional inspection — never file blind. Document the damage with photos and a written report, then call your insurance company to open a claim. They'll send an adjuster. Have your roofer present at the adjuster meeting if possible — it's the single best way to make sure damage isn't missed or undervalued. We do this for our customers at no cost.
Do you work with all insurance companies?+
Yes. We've worked with every major carrier — State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, USAA, Erie, Farmers, and dozens of regional companies. We meet adjusters on-site, supply documentation, and never ask homeowners to commit insurance fraud by waiving deductibles.

Project Timing

How long does a roof replacement take?+
A typical single-family asphalt shingle replacement takes one to two days from tear-off to cleanup. Larger homes, complex rooflines, or metal installations can take three to five days. Weather is the biggest variable. We give you a realistic timeline up front and stay in communication if anything changes.
Can a roof be replaced in winter?+
Yes, with the right precautions. Asphalt shingles can be installed in cold weather as long as the deck is dry and the shingles are kept warm enough to seal properly. Metal panels are not weather-sensitive in the same way. We schedule winter work carefully around storms and can often respond faster in the off-season.

Materials

What is the best roofing material for Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky weather?+
Architectural asphalt shingles (especially IKO Cambridge or Dynasty) remain the best value for most homes in the Tri-State — they handle our temperature swings, wind, and snow well. Standing seam metal is the premium choice for longevity (40+ years) and storm resistance. Corrugated metal is a strong middle option, especially for outbuildings, additions, and modern home designs.
What is metal roofing and is it worth it?+
Metal roofing is a long-life roof system made from steel, aluminum, or copper panels. We install both corrugated and standing seam systems using 28-gauge Galvalume steel with a 40-year manufacturer warranty. It costs more up front than shingles but typically lasts two to three times longer, sheds snow and rain better, and can lower attic temperatures in summer. For homeowners planning to stay in their home long-term, the math usually works out.
What is the difference between standing seam and corrugated metal roofing?+
Standing seam panels have raised, interlocking vertical seams with concealed fasteners — the cleanest, most premium look, and the longest life. Corrugated panels have exposed fasteners and a wavy or ribbed profile — more affordable, faster to install, and excellent for outbuildings, porches, additions, and modern designs. We install both and own the roll-form machine to fabricate panels on-site.

Hiring a Contractor

How do I find a certified roofer near me?+
Look for a contractor that is manufacturer-certified (IKO and GAF are the two biggest names), licensed and insured in your state, has a permanent local address — not a P.O. box — and a long history of verifiable reviews. Mr. Roofer meets all of those: IKO Certified, GAF Certified, licensed and insured, three permanent offices in OH and WV, and 190+ five-star Google reviews.
What should I look for when hiring a roofing contractor?+
A permanent local address, state license and insurance, manufacturer certifications (IKO, GAF), a long history of verifiable reviews, and a written contract that spells out scope, materials, timeline, and warranty. Avoid anyone who pressures you to sign at the door, asks for full payment up front, or offers to waive your deductible — that last one is insurance fraud.
Why should I choose a local roofer over a storm chaser?+
Storm chasers fly in after a major event, sign as many contracts as possible, and disappear once the work is done. When something goes wrong six months later, there's nobody to call. A local roofer with a permanent address — like our offices in South Point, New Boston, and Charleston — has to live with their work and their reputation. That accountability is your warranty.

Certifications

What is an IKO certified roofer?+
An IKO Certified roofer has been formally trained and approved by IKO, one of North America's largest shingle manufacturers, to install their products to spec. Certification matters because it unlocks extended manufacturer warranties that uncertified installers can't offer. We are IKO Certified and install the Cambridge and Dynasty architectural shingle lines as our primary roofing system.
What is a GAF certified roofer?+
GAF certification means the contractor has met GAF's training, insurance, and reputation standards to install their shingle systems. GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. The certification gives homeowners access to GAF's enhanced workmanship and material warranties. We are GAF Certified and install GAF systems whenever a homeowner prefers that brand.

Storm Damage

What are the signs of hail damage on a roof?+
Round dark spots where granules are missing, dents on metal vents and flashing, bruised or soft spots when pressed, and granules collecting in gutters or downspouts. Hail damage is often invisible from the ground, which is why post-storm inspections matter — damage that goes unreported can void future claims for the same roof.
How long does storm damage repair take?+
Emergency tarping or temporary repairs we can usually do within 24 to 48 hours. Full insurance-claim repairs depend on adjuster timing and material availability — typically two to six weeks from claim approval to job completion. We move as fast as the insurance process allows.

Roof Lifespan

How long does a new roof last?+
Architectural asphalt shingles last 25 to 30 years in our climate when properly installed and ventilated. Standing seam metal lasts 40 to 50 years or more. Three-tab shingles, which we no longer install as a standard option, last about 15 to 20 years. Proper attic ventilation, regular gutter cleaning, and prompt minor repairs add years to any system.
What causes a roof to fail prematurely?+
Poor attic ventilation is the number one culprit — it bakes shingles from below and shortens their life by years. Other common causes are improper installation (especially nailing patterns), missing or rusted flashing, ice dam damage, and neglected minor repairs that turn into deck rot. Proper installation and a 5-minute annual inspection prevent most of these.

Free Services

Do you offer free roof inspections?+
Yes. Every inspection is free, with no obligation and no high-pressure sales. We climb the roof, check ventilation, look at flashing and penetrations, and give you a written report with photos. If you don't need a new roof, we'll tell you that.

Financing

Do you offer financing for roof replacement?+
Yes — we partner with GoodLeap for roof and gutter financing. Application takes a few minutes, the initial pull is a soft credit check that doesn't affect your score, and most homeowners get a decision in minutes. See our financing page for details and to start an application.

Credentials

Are you licensed and insured?+
Yes. We are fully licensed in West Virginia (license #WV062297), carry general liability and workers compensation insurance, and operate as a registered LLC (Mister Roofer LLC). We can provide certificates of insurance directly to homeowners or HOAs on request.

Service Area

What areas do you serve?+
We serve the entire Tri-State area from three offices: South Point OH (headquarters), New Boston OH, and Charleston WV. That covers Lawrence County OH, Scioto County OH, Cabell and Wayne counties in WV, Boyd County KY, and the entire Kanawha Valley — 70+ communities across Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Maintenance

How often should I have my roof inspected?+
Once a year for any roof over 10 years old, and after any major hail or wind event regardless of age. A quick spring or fall inspection catches small issues — a lifted shingle, cracked boot, gutter pulling away — before they become leaks. We do these inspections for free in our service area.

Warranties

What is a roofing workmanship warranty?+
It's the contractor's promise to fix installation-related problems at no cost for a defined period. It's separate from the manufacturer's material warranty. Workmanship issues — improper nailing, bad flashing, leaks at penetrations — usually appear within the first few years. We back our installations with a written workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturer's coverage.

Gutters

How do gutters affect my roof's lifespan?+
Gutters move water away from the roof edge, fascia, soffit, and foundation. When they're clogged or undersized, water backs up under shingles, rots fascia boards, and freezes into ice dams in winter — all of which destroy roofs from the edges in. Healthy gutters are one of the cheapest forms of roof protection there is.

Siding

What is fiber cement siding?+
Fiber cement is a composite of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber that looks like wood but resists fire, insects, and rot. James Hardie is the best-known brand. It carries a 30-year warranty, holds paint better than wood, and is one of the highest-performing siding materials available. We install fiber cement, vinyl, and engineered wood siding.

About Mr. Roofer

Is Mr. Roofer veteran-owned?+
Yes. Owner Jon Robinson is a U.S. military veteran. He founded Mr. Roofer to bring the same standards of accountability and workmanship he learned in service to homeowners across the Tri-State. He also holds degrees from Marshall University and West Virginia University.
What makes Mr. Roofer different from other roofing companies?+
Three things. First, we live where we work — three permanent offices in the Tri-State, not a P.O. box. Second, we own our roll-form machine and fabricate metal panels on-site, which is rare in this region. Third, we take an assessment-first approach: we'd rather lose a sale than sell a homeowner a roof they don't need. The 190+ five-star reviews are the result of that approach.
