Filing a roof insurance claim is a 5-step process: get a free professional inspection, receive a written damage report, contact your insurance carrier to open the claim, meet the adjuster on-site with your contractor present, and approve the work once the claim is settled. Most claims for storm damage are resolved within 2 to 4 weeks when documented properly from the start.
If your roof was damaged by hail, wind, a fallen tree, or another covered weather event, your homeowner's insurance policy likely covers the cost of repair or replacement. The challenge isn't whether you have a valid claim — it's making sure the full scope of damage is documented and approved. That's where the right contractor makes all the difference.
Mr. Roofer handles roofing insurance claims every week across Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. We've built our process around what actually works with insurance adjusters, and we never charge for inspections, documentation, or adjuster meetings.
Step 1: Schedule a Free Roof Inspection First
Before you call your insurance company, get a professional inspection. This is the single most important thing you can do to set your claim up for success.
When Mr. Roofer inspects your roof, we document every area of damage with photographs, identify the cause (hail, wind, debris), and produce a written report you can submit with your claim. Adjusters take claims much more seriously when they arrive backed by professional documentation.
If you skip this step and call your insurance company first, the adjuster will inspect on their own and write whatever they see. Damage they miss won't be covered.
Schedule your free inspection or call (740) 263-4357.
Step 2: Review Your Damage Report
After the inspection, Mr. Roofer provides a written report including:
- High-resolution photos of every area of damage
- A description of the type of damage (hail dents, wind-lifted shingles, granule loss, etc.)
- Affected components (shingles, ridge caps, flashing, gutters, vents)
- Our professional opinion on whether repair or full replacement is needed
Review the report with us. If we find damage that warrants a claim, we'll walk you through what to expect from your insurance carrier. Learn more about how we identify hail damage and storm damage inspections.
Step 3: Contact Your Insurance Company
Call your insurance company's claims line and tell them you'd like to file a claim for storm damage. Be ready to provide:
- The date of the storm
- A description of the damage (use the language from our report)
- Your policy number
- A request to schedule an adjuster visit
Your insurance company will assign a claim number and schedule an adjuster to come inspect the damage. Tell them your roofing contractor will be present at the inspection — this is normal and expected.
Step 4: Meet the Adjuster On-Site
This is the most important step in the entire process. Mr. Roofer meets every adjuster on-site at no cost.
Why does this matter? Adjusters are professionals, but they cover a huge geographic area and inspect dozens of roofs each week. When your contractor walks the roof alongside the adjuster pointing out documented damage, the adjuster's report reflects the true scope. When no contractor is present, damage commonly gets missed or undervalued.
If the adjuster's initial estimate comes in too low to properly replace the roof, we file a supplement on your behalf. A supplement is an additional claim for the difference between the adjuster's estimate and the actual cost of the work — at no extra cost to you.
Step 5: Approve the Work and Schedule Replacement
Once the claim is approved, your insurance company issues a payment (often in two parts: an initial check and a final check after the work is completed). You pay your deductible — and only your deductible — out of pocket. Anything beyond that should be covered.
Mr. Roofer then schedules your full roof replacement using premium IKO Cambridge or Dynasty architectural shingles, backed by our workmanship warranty. Most replacements are completed in 1 to 3 days.
What If My Insurance Claim Is Denied?
If your claim is denied, don't panic. Many claims are denied initially because the damage wasn't documented properly. Mr. Roofer can review the denial with you and, in many cases, help you file an appeal or a supplement with stronger documentation.
If the claim is genuinely not covered, we offer flexible financing through GoodLeap so you can still get the roof replacement you need.
Important: Never Sign a Contract Before Your Inspection
Some contractors will pressure you to sign a contract or "assignment of benefits" before they've even inspected your roof. Do not sign anything before a thorough inspection and written estimate. We never ask homeowners to sign anything before the inspection is complete.
Also, never work with a contractor who offers to waive your deductible or pay it for you. This is illegal in most states and a major red flag.
